Playing Catch Up

I've been trying to figure out where to go from here with this blog. Should I be writing pieces that are geared towards encouragement, or should I be writing more about the process? Ultimately, I guess the question I have for myself is: what is the purpose of this blog? Is it just a space to put my thoughts with photos? Or is it a place for meaningful dialogue about the art that I have been creating?

As you may have noticed, the website has been down for almost two months. One big reason it was down, was that `I didn't have a computer for about a month, so I couldn't keep up with it and it fell by the wayside. You may have also noticed that along with the website being down I haven't been present on Instagram. Honestly, the reason for the second one is a bit stupid. I still have good work to share because I never stopped working, but I haven't known how to follow up after my last post. Those last photos are some of my favorite images I've ever posted anywhere, and the response has been overwhelming. I think that in some way it's lead to me feeling like I couldn't possibly top myself. I think that's the struggle of every artist, but that doesn't mean that we give up or that we should doubt that what we are creating has any less value than those pieces of the past. Since I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, I have to get over that, and since I want more than anything share with you all the pieces I've been working on, I will go back to posting consistently this week.

Aside from that bit of doubt, I've actually been working on putting some things together including some projects that I'm hoping will be ready by the fall. I'm taking some ambitious steps forward and I hope that you all love what I've been working on. I'm also hoping to see people get inspired and ready to get up and fight for change.

One thing that I see as so important, is the need to fight for one another. In a world where the focus always seems to be on self and how things affect us, I believe it's important to take time to realize that what affects others affects us. You may not see the effect today, but one day you will look up and realize that the very cause that others were asking that you stand for are plaguing you. Another thing that is very important to me is seeing this world become a better place for black women. If you know me, then you know I have two younger sisters (Vashti and Anna) and the current state of the country coupled with the way people treat/look at black women is alarming to me. There is literally no real value placed on black women in society. But if there are new and inventive ways to take advantage of black women, then without hesitation it seems like people line up to take turns degrading them. This has got to change, and I hope to be apart of that change. Every day my goal is to encourage at least one black woman to be happy, tell them just how beautiful they actually are and remind them not to be swayed by these unreal standards that are pushed on them every day. Ultimately, I want black women and girls to know that they are loved, valued, and seen as integral to the furthering of society.

I promise that in the coming weeks & months I'll have much more work to share with you, that will hopefully encourage and inspire you. Just please stick with me through the process.
